01 - why do you use the rm1x? just for the sequencor, or also for the sounds I don't use this machine anymore , its broken.
 02 - which sounds do you use more: bd, sd, percus, synth bass, sfx,etc ? when i had an rm1x, the left channel was always rhythm, the right was always sounds. this then mixed mono down 2 channels on a mixer giving more control to the general picture.

General procedure was to feed most of the punchy drums ( kik clap etc) through the amp simulator effect with the overdrive turned down: this tricks the machine into playing twice as loud, or alternatively for kick drums this can be achieved by using the chorus at 0ms delay and the mod speed and depth turned off, the feedback right up: oops the speaker's nearly dead!!knowhatimean?

03 - is there a sequencor which will let you forget the rm1x: xl7, rs7000, mc909 ? for me it all depends on how many people are around me when i'm playing / working: at home i have a virtual studio comprising of a digital mixer, a creamware pulsar 2, and a p4 overclocked to 2.7ghz running cubase sx, reason 2, kontakt, some freeware and al the synths + fx bundled with the soundcard, now using this setup i need complete concentration and i prefer to have 2 people maximum around when this is happening ( a collaborator and a drinks mixer?), its obviously my preferred music environment ( inside the machine i mean, but the rest is cool too) now in a party/ concert environment the last thing i would do is leave the entire dancefloor in the hands of a microsoft powered computer, where anything can go wrong and often does. Ok, so find me a hardware sequencer to replace a pc/mac/atari that ISN'T a rm1x, xL/mp-7, rs7000, mc303 / 505 / 308 /909. And even if you do, we're talking about dragging truckloads of rack samplers, synthesizer's, 3 hours plugging everything in so we can play for 1h30- 3hr maximum ( everybody's gotta have their turn and too many party organizers think that 10 acts on a flyer is what brings people - WRONG!), Laptop's for me just aren't doing it enough yet, and again we're giving the ultimate power to break down to somebody else, so for me its down to the versatility factor - I've followed the evolution of the "groovebox" from day one, I can do things instantaneously with these machines that would take me a whole night to program on anything else, and they're cheap enough to be replaced within the week ( and smash over a policeman/door security/club organizer's head )should anything go wrong.
04 - how many rm1x have you killed during your carrier ? what have been destroyed : controllers, mute, internal electronic? screen ? BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LIKE this question!!!!!! Can we go and see roland/yamaha with this one????

Ok the first thing that goes on any "groovebox" i've ever had is the buttons, normally the start/ restart buttons first, then the mutes, then keyboard. it gets to the point where the thing switches on, starts in sync, changes pattern but is impossible to write anything new in. It takes about 45 minutes to undo an rm1x, changing buttons over can be achieved with a good quality soldering iron, and feels a bit like the crucial moment in any bomb defusing scene in any hollywood film ( don't breathe!!!), putting it back together is doable if you drew a diagram first but all the ribbon connectors are different sizes so eventually you'll get it right. GETTING NEW BUTTONS FOR THESE MACHINES IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A NORMAL CUSTOMER LIKE YOU AND ME!!!!!!!!!! so all of you, go make friends with your local musc shop now!!!! or address these problems to the forum of your chosen machine. It took 9 months for me to get 75 replacement buttons for my rm1x. i dread to think whats coming next with the rs7000.

05 - when you're composing at home, do you use cubase (then put them in the machine), or directly on the machine ? No, my studio life and my live set life are totally separate affairs, same way we try not to take our sex lives to work with us????
06 - Why are you using the Korg ER1? Is it because of the price ? Why not the Jomox Xbase 09 that sound more pro? Oh I have a jomox airbase 99 rack at home. I find the electribe red more friendly in a live environment, everything is saved in the pattern you're in. the whole patt /prog thing on a jomox xbase 09 is cool , but just too confusing for me to handle correctly on a friday/ saturday night next to 10kw - 50kw sound, and generally I don't have a fixed source for my bass drums etc, if you can't get what you want out of any one of your machines, some box some where in your setup is not your friend!
07 - how much time do you spend on the machines during week I prefer to write live patterns when i'm on the move, so a good train journey or a stay at someone's home before /after a party is normally where i'll get a pattern or two done . At home I tend to work more on studio productions, or edit up bits of live work that sound good. I write liveset at home when I have a long break between dates, or when I 've replaced something. All of this depends of course on how well the machines work too. Fill em up before they break !!! that s what i say.
08 - What an underground artist like you can
appreciate out of the underground scene ? Jungle D&b, Tekno & hardcore?

09 - Sometime in live, do you have a complete song in a
machine, or it's always loops
ITS A MIX OF THE TWO: I USE LOOPS IN THE MACHINES, BUT MY BODY AND MIND AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF PLAYING WITH THE NEXT SET OF PATTERNS WORK OUT A SEQUENCE IN WHICH TO BRING THE LOOP BASED MATERIAL IN AND OUT OF THE MIX, THIS IS WHAT MAKES UP THE BASIS OF THE REPERTOIRE: RAW MATERIAL IS USELESS WITHOUT DIRECTION, THEREFORE MERE PATTERN PLAYING IS USELESS WITHOUT AN IDEA OF "HOW THE SONG GOES". 02 - what was your first machine, your first music style ? 02: Never had a music style. 1st machine was a yamaha MSX computer with a dx7 chip inside, i was 13 yrs old.
03 - what was your first complete studio, complete live configuration ? 03: My 1st full configuration for a studio? that would be .....somebody else's studio ( rob playford , movin shadow recs)
04 - what was the first machine you were ready to kill to keep it ? 04: I 'm not a violent type, to me the machines don't matter, its whats in my mind body and soul i would like to preserve, that i would kill to defend if necessary.

06: Synclavier.  depeche mode made complete album's on the thing, art of noise swear by them, trevor horn has someone paid to push the buttons on his one, they still retail at 250,000 euro's 20 years on. One day........one day.......

THIS WAS MADE IN YEAR 2000 IN MARSEILLE BY ME AND D.A.R.T (DESTROY ALL
RATIONAL THOUGHT) OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS SYNCHRONIZATION. THE MAJORITY OF
THE UNDERLYING VIDEO CLIPS - THE ONES THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO GO IN TIME WITH
THE MUSIC WERE TRIGGERED BY THE SEQUENCER I WAS USING FOR THE MUSIC - I WAS
ON LOGIC AUDIO ISIS (YEP BACK IN THE DAYS WE WERE ALL ON VERY UNPROFESSIONAL
EQUIPMENT ) AND THE VIDEO CLIPS WERE INSIDE A COMPUTER RUNNING "VJAMM"? THE
SIGNAL WAS SENT VIA USB MIDI THUS GIVING US A 3 OUT OF 10 SUCCESS RATE. YES
I WILL DO THIS SORT OF THING AGAIN WHEN CERTAIN THINGS LIKE USB MIDI GET

120BPM - THE GOOD LITTLE SIDE EFFECT HERE IS THAT AS SOON AS YOU START YOUR
PATTERNS ARE 2 BARS LONG INSTEAD OF 1.
